The Shima Kuwa is hand crafted from the premier grade of Mulberry wood from the Island of Mikurajima, a small Island in the Izu archipelago, famous for this very rare and precious natural material. The Shima Kuwa Mulberry is famously used for special gifts for the Emperor’s family and business leaders alike in Japan. This special pen is reminiscent of the style of pens made around the foundation of the Company 100 years ago. A special ‘anchor’ design clip has been commissioned for this product – a symbol that is very special to Sailor.
The beauty of the Mulberry wood grain is achieved using ‘Fuki Urushi’ – a deep burnishing process using Urushi lacquers from the famous Jouhou Temple. The Sailor Limited Edition 100th Anniversary Shima Kuwa Pen is decorated using gold powder maki-e on the cap below the clip (showing 100 years and also elegant ‘wave’ designs symbolic of the 100 years of Sailor, are seen around the cap ring.
The 21K solid gold nib is stamped with the ‘100 Years’ insignia and also shows the ‘anchor’ with special draped chains signifying the 100 years history and the close connection to the sea. The Sailor Limited Edition 100th Anniversary Shima Kuwa Pen features a special silk cloth Pen wrap made of Ushikubi –Tsumugi (a traditional craft in Ishikawa prefecture since 800 years) and the black Gift box package is coated in Aizu Nuri (Urushi).
